Osilalei Safari Lodge, Kenya

Complete tranquility in the Maasai Rangelands

Children and elephantLess than two hours drive from Nairobi, in the midst of the Maasai Rangelands, we have built the ultimate Safari Lodge. A self-catering lodge for six people to sleep in comfortably, this place is the dream of anyone who wants to be away from the busy town for a while, and stay in the wild. Silence reins here, with the exception of the wildlife, wind, birds and crickets at night making their natural noises. The grass and tree-covered hills, with the Maparasha Hills to the right and, on a clear day, Kilimanjaro in the distance form the perfect backdrop for your reading, or just the sipping of a drink. Zebra, Ostrich, Dik-dik, Giraffe, Generuk, Thomson's and Grant's Gazelle and Impala have all been spotted on the land around this lodge.

The accommodation

The lodge has three bedrooms with a giant double bed in the master bedroom, two single beds in the small bedroom, and two single beds in the guest bedroom. The master and small bedrooms are self-contained with shower and toilet. The master bedroom and the guest bedroom have fireplaces for cold days in the rainy season. There is a roomy kitchen with gas cooker, kerosene stove and a traditional Jiko, whatever has your fancy. Running water (but no hot water yet) is provided here, despite the fact that it is in the middle of the drylands. A dining room next to the kitchen allows the family to enjoy their meals, though most of the time you will be sitting on the verandah that surrounds the house. The farm further includes the home of the caretaker some 50 meters away, the water tanks, and the goat-pen beyond that. Their bells tingling will accompany their browsing in the day, and their restful sleep in the night.

Security and freedom of movement

The lodge is located on private land, with the neighbours being the traditional Maasai land owners. The care taker of the lodge provides the security for you to enjoy the peace and tranquility on the verandah until you choose to retire, or for you to walk around the area in the daytime. Some 150 acres are part of the property, but the thousands of acres around this domain are equally accessible and provide the stunning background of this remarkable place. There are no fences, and hardly any roads to hinder your walk.

You can live the life of a rancher

We would love to welcome you in this lodge. Mr. Kilonzo, Daniel and Mary are willing to accommodate you and help you in any way they can. Though the lodge is self-catering, we can arrange for food to be prepared. Information on prices, availability and booking can be found under Reservations. Or call our caretaker Ms Mary for a spur-of-the-moment decision to stay at the lodge. She can inform you about availability.
